Honoring Our Seniors: Elizabeth Martin

A bad fall led Elizabeth Martin to Manor Care Health Services-Lacey. While she does not remember what took place that led to it, she does remember driving home afterwards and then not being able to get out of bed. She was fortunate to have a concerned friend come to check in on her when telephone calls went unanswered. After receiving care at the hospital, she was transferred over for continuing care.

Elizabeth is an artist and enjoys drawing and painting anything she wants to, with an eye for the abstract. She likes to be able to laugh about herself, explaining that she realized she needed glasses as her paintings just kept getting bigger and bigger --to the point she could no longer fit the huge canvases in her car. After getting glasses, she noted that her paintings went back to a more manageable size.

Elizabeth has many stories to tell about her family. Among her favorites – that her family’s history goes back to England during the time of Queen Elizabeth I. She likes talking about her grandfather’s work as an inventor, and she shared that her Aunt taught her how to use snuff as a young teenager. Her childhood was music-filled. Her father played in a Dixieland band and hosted many musical parties at their house.

When asked about her life’s work she chuckled and said, “It’s not over honey.” She continues to love art and advises people to” do what you want to do, have a good time and do it well.”

Elizabeth is one of thousands of seniors who rely on skilled nursing care and services in Washington. We celebrate her life, her art, and her excellent sense of humor.
