When nursing homes unexpectedly close, people suffer. Seattle Keiro: The Loss of a Community Treasure

The Seattle Asian Pacific Islander community suffered a great loss the spring of 2020 with the closure of Seattle Keiro skilled nursing facility. Prior to closure, Keiro, which means “respect for elders,” had a 40-year history of culturally-sensitive care to the community. There were 115 residents who were forced to relocate, and 280 staff members who lost employment.

The effort to relocate residents was difficult and painful for families and their care providers. The impact continues for those who suffered transfer trauma and physical and mental decline because of the closure.
